Prescription Drug Remeron®

Mirtazapine, generic name for the anti-depressant Remeron®. Remeron® is indicated for major depressive disorder. Remeron® is not currently indicated for generalized anxiety disorders as some of the other anti-depressants are. Caution should be used, as Remeron® has been shown to cause blood disorders that make the person more susceptible to infections. Remeron® can sometimes cause changes in electrocariogram results. It can cause tachycardia (increase in heart rate).

Remeron® is classified pharmacologically as a tetracyclic and inhibits serotonin reuptake. The use of Remeron® is most associated with side effects such as sleepiness. Discontinued use, especially when abrupt, may result in spontaneous side effects including increased appetite, confusion, tremor, and dizziness. Side effects may also include somnolence, dry mouth, constipation, and weight gain.
